Bottegando Italia

WHO WE ARE
Bottegando Italia was born in Italy, in Verona, from Sergio and Stefania's desire to create beautiful objects capable of bringing joy to people. Stefania is an internationally renowned artist who creates paintings, sculptures, and artisanal and artistic creations using a wide variety of materials. Sergio, a lover and connoisseur of pens and oriental arts, especially Japanese, handcrafts fountain pens and watch dials embellished with Urushi lacquer and the complex Maki-e techniques.
THE MISSION
Our encounter with Maki-e fountain pens dates back many years. The inspiration received from this magical meeting sparked a strong desire to create the most beautiful Urushi and Maki-e pens the world has ever seen, blending Italian style and artistic sensitivity with the most refined materials and techniques of Japanese and oriental art. Our pens are unique pieces or extremely limited series. Each pen is born from the desire to give people a special tool with which to write and pass on their dreams to future generations. Each pen is a dream created to give life to new dreams.
URUSHI
It is the finest Japanese lacquer, obtained by refining the sap of the Rhus Vernicifera tree. It has been used in the Far East, both in China and Japan, since 4000 B.C. It is a completely natural product, non-toxic once dry, extremely hard yet at the same time elastic, resistant to acids, alkalis, alcohol, and high temperatures. Urushi has the property of polymerizing upon contact with atmospheric humidity and, in fact, for its optimal hardening and drying, special containers called “Furo” are used, with temperatures from 20 to 25 degrees C and humidity levels between 70 and 90 percent. Bottegando Italia guarantees the use of natural and original imported Urushi, processed according to traditional techniques.
MAKI-E
Maki-e means “Sprinkled Painting” and refers to a set of traditional Japanese artistic techniques, begun in the ninth century A.D., that exploit the extraordinary adhesive power of urushi. Decorative motifs are created by sprinkling precious metal powders onto the fresh lacquer. By layering metallic powders and lacquer and using various techniques, different plays of light, colors, and image depth are achieved. These artistic techniques require a lot of time and great skill and attention, as they do not allow for any mistakes, but they make it possible to create a virtually “eternal” and evocative work for many future generations.
